"One Day"

A well known David Nicholls book, One Day is about two people, Emma and Dexter, who meet on their graduation and each chapter shows how they and their relationship have developed, or not developed over a year, the same day "15th July" St Swithin's day. The book is written as an omnipresent view, in which you do learn the character's feelings, I admire how Nicholls cracks both the female and male point of view, as in some books depending on the gender of the writer one side is biased. I fell in love with the character Emma, as she becomes an author to a series of books, and I click with any character who's into writing, so I felt I could relate to her, and Dexter, to me was someone who I didn't like at first but i grew to love. It's great how David either did his research or remembers a lot over the 20 year time period in this book of fashion styles and 'in' things around the two decades.

I bought this book as I had heard a fair bit about it, and I saw people on buses and trains reading it, so I was influenced, but I do not regret it, and I am yet to see the film with Anne Hathaway, but I doubt it'll beat the book. Again -SPOILER ALERT- I stopped reading the book towards the end because yet again ONE of the main characters die. And that for me just ruined anything else he could write after that. But I recently picked it up again in my spare time to finally finish the last three useless chapters, to me the book stopped when that character died, I was really enjoying this book as well, it was completely different to anything I had read before and I became addicted to the style of writing. So I would recommend this book to anyone, as i feel it's universal and relatable, to anyone who's been around for about 20 years, and for everything about this book (excluding the ending).

I rate this book as a 9/10, but for the ending included and 8/10.
