This book will make you think 'what if..?'. As to what if it were the other way around, if white people were the second class citizens and black people the higher class? Well, in Malorie Blackman's novel your question will be answered. Yes, the writer is black, which seems to have inspired her (as at the back of the book she tells you how it came to be) from when she was a school learning about white explorers who made history, but not black people.
I was recommended to read it by a good friend of mine as quote "it's my favourite book!" so i gave it a shot. I was captivated by it and finished the 400 page book in two days (boasting? Oh yes i am) as it always has something going on between the two main characters; Sephy and Callum, she is the higher class Cross with a well known father in the government, he is a lowly nought who lives in more of a shack than a house and gets spit on. So yes it can be assumed that a 'romance' will occur, but how else can you show the strain of two different worlds colliding?
From just the cover it implies black and white people by the obvious colours, and this subject intrigues me, especially as it's the opposite of our past, or in some cases racism is still lurking about. And throughout the book grammar plays a small part, as i noticed that Crosses were always with a captial, and noughts didn't, which for symbolism marks that Crosses are better and more important.
I will say that i enjoyed this book deeply, especially at the speed i read it at, but i did not like the ending. I seem to have an issue with writer's endings to their books recently. As -SPOILER ALERT- ONE of the main characters -cough- dies -cough- and it was a stupid decision, but it mixes it up as you want a happy ending but no, there are not always happy endings, and that's the moral if this book; noughts and crosses don't mix.
I give this book 8 and a half/10 (for not having my happy ending!)

You write a good book review, Saff - sounds interesting!
ReplyDeleteWhy thank you very much, I get quite opinionated when something doesn't go my way in books, I really recommend it!
ReplyDeleteNot a new idea but sounds like an interesting read. I have now got Hnger Games trilogy on my to-be-read shelf as a result of your recommendation and I have to admit, partly because they were doing a buy three for two offer.
