Southsea Fest 2012 Review and Interviews

Why hello fellow readers, I am excited to show you the finished version of my review, and that it's publicly shown on http://www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk/blog/2012/09/southsea-fest-2/ and I may have been jumping for joy yet again....enjoy!

Saffron Watson @ Southsea Fest…

So it’s what I had been waiting for! I collected my wristband at 11.30am and already there was potential chaos!  There were queues leading outside the wine vaults and starting down the road along with the chatter and excitement of hundreds of people trying to squeeze into the many small venues across Albert Road. Fans of the different genres were heading to their favourite venues and giggling with their friends in anticipation for a day of live music and getting tipsy. The security guys gave the ‘ok’ after seeing my wrist band, and off I went to fill up my ears with music.

Little Johnny Russell’s – Clayton Strange
For fans of Foals, Bombay Bicycle Club and Django Django…
At my first venue for the day I was looking forward to my first Southsea Fest experience, especially as this band were my favourite genre, Indie. They got their band name from a friend of the band called ‘Clayton’ and in bassist Dan’s words: “he is probably quite strange, and some one said ‘Clayton’s Strange’” and so they named the band after him but dropped the ‘s’. “He still comes to all our gigs and is getting less strange so we may change to Clayton Normal soon.”
I wasn’t dissapointed; seeing Clayton Strange live was quite an experience, with their catchy beat drilling through you in the small venue. You get to be so close and personal with them you can feel the vibrations of the drummer, Steve, and bassist, Alex through the floor. I can see this band becoming successful, with the likes of Arcade Fire in terms of their music genre. This time next year they hope to be touring through Bolivia and Peru, but if not they would like to go on a cruise ship, so who knows where they’ll be? Well I know I want more from these guys. They have said they’d love to play again next year, so fingers crossed…

Edge of the Wedge – Her Parents
For fans of Internet Forever…

The tiny stage wasn’t enough for this band so they came off-stage for guitar solos. Calum Gunn and Christopher Alcxxk walked through the audience and back, dancing with their guitars; almost thrusting them around. As an audience member I was terrified of getting hit, but the whole show was very funny and entertaining to see. They are more than your average punk band, they’re lively with loud, catchy, short and sweary songs. As their songs are so short, they have all the best bits crammed in, and it leaves you wanting to hear more.  Every member of the band participated in singing, full of enthusiasm and effort in screaming the lyrics. In particular, Sean Clothier, with his facial expressions (reaching his face as close to the microphone as possible!) amused me. I usually don’t listen to much of this genre in my own time, but now that I have seen Her Parents, I will listen to their new album, ‘Physical Release’. The impressive thing about this band was that when Christopher’s amp ‘died’ on him, he carried on singing, and swapped guitars with Calum Gunn. Even the drummer, Vilhjálmur, came out and sang (lying face down on the floor, screaming). This band were lively and original. Sean Clothier (lead singer and guitarist) had odd socks on, and Christopher was sporting cut off chino’s and a bad-ass mustache — great entertainment value, these guys are great to watch.

Little Johnny Russell’s – Mamas Lips
For fans of Little Feat, The Band and The Beatles…
I then returned to what turned out to be my favourite venue where Mamas Lips were performing. They have been together for eight months now. A rock’n’roll/blues band, my favourite song of their show was, ‘I’ll stay free’, which sounded like a mix between the Beatles’ song ‘Come Together’ and Ram Jam’s ‘Black Betty’. But it was more bluesy with frontman, Jack’s husky voice and it had more of an edgy sound.  When I asked about their time at the Southsea Fest they replied, “It is the first kind of festival we have done as a band so it was a pleasure. Great atmosphere all around and just a great idea to have something like that on a busy street.” Jack’s singing voice is very serene to listen to. He looks so laid back while he’s singing, as well, which was a big contrast from Her Parents putting their all into singing. As I looked around the pub, I could see everyone bobbing their heads and moving their feet to the beat, as you can quite easily get into their songs. And their stage presence draws you in because they know what they’re doing. I asked Jack what he thought of the audience and their response. He replied; “It is always different playing to your friends because you know you will get a good response, but when you play to a room full of strangers and get a good reaction, you must be doing something right.” They all seemed like genuine guys, and they all know each other either from school, since childhood or through family. They sound a bit like Jack White’s new band with their bluesy fast pace songs, and they’ve taken influence from southern rock guitar play. I thoroughly enjoyed their show, as they had a different twist from the other bands I saw there.

The One Eyed Dog – Los Broncos
For fans of Hot Snakes, Marked Men and White Stripes…
This trio describe their style as ‘garage rock’. The band name stood roughly translated means ‘a wild horse that resists being ridden’ in Spanish, which displays rebellion. Their dress code was very mixed/ The singer wore trackies, a top and a bandana, the bassist was wearing a blazer and smart shoes, and the drummer had his cap on backwards. As there were only three of them, all producing different pitches and sounds, it was easy to pick out which was which and there was no overpowering of several guitars. I usually don’t listen to much of the ‘screamo’ genre of music, but I quite liked these guys. They have a metal and heavy blues sound, which is a hybrid of interesting genres. The lead singer was very friendly and chatty between songs, which bodes well on our part as we get to see their personality. He voiced half way through that he carried on through two songs with five strings, but when a second string broke he had to change guitars. This shows how much power he was putting into his strumming!
This band got me, and everyone around me, toe tapping and nodding along, which is a good sign for the band! I really was taken by the bassist’s parts of the songs, as I felt it stood out and I enjoyed the sound produced. I can say I enjoyed this band so much that I may have gone a little bit deaf afterwards…

The Kings Theatre – The B of the Bang
For fans of Beirut, Bjork and Bon Iver…
When I read this band’s description I knew they were up my street. They were at The Kings Theatre, so we got a good view of them. At a first glance I saw a Paramore type set up, with the number of band members, but they are much more mellow than that. What really drew me to them was the variety of different instruments mentioned in the descrition, which I hadn’t seen before. This set them apart from the other bands which were more metal and punk. Unfortunately I didn’t get to hear all of these instruments so I was a bit disspointed. However, there was an acoustic song, ‘Last Day on Earth,’ in their opening, which they performed in one of the royal boxes with bongos and an acoustic guitar, which was very impressive. Wit, the lead singer, has a distinctive voice that’s so beautifully haunting at times. In Wit’s own words they are like: “A lo-fi, electronica-tinged, anti-folk cake with a gothic, grunge icing. Topped with cherries.” B of the Bang were fascinating and intriguing to listen to, the melodies between all the males and the one female harmonised beautifully. The performance was a little lacking though, I would have liked to have seen more movement and stage presence to keep me entertained. I can see myself listening to their albums, but I would be unlikely to watch them live again.

I am so glad I didn’t miss this festival. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and discovered new bands. Through the day I preferred the smaller venues that allowed for a more personal space.  You could stand less than a metre away from the musicians, seeing every string they plucked on their guitar. This viewing point works for me as I always love to watch guitarists, and the lead guitarist could strum so fast I was sure he must have been missing the strings. The only down side to this event was that I didn’t get to see all the bands I wanted! Ed Wood, Belligerance, Screaming Maldini, Gem and the Deadheads and Bear Cavalry were all bands I was hoping to catch but unable to due to clashed timings at the different venues. Hopefully next year I will be able to see the bands I missed!

Band of the week

Of monsters and men

I discovered this band on a top charts programme on MTV, and the second I heard their backing track, catchy tune and lyrics I was already humming and singing along to the song. I hope to hear a lot more of their music in the future. Also I must add I were intrigued by the animated video to it, as I've mentioned in previous posts, that I love videos that catch my attention, especially animated ones. In this video the heads of the band members are on cartoon bodies, and their expressions are all formed of several photo's of their faces.

So check out this video and listen away http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghb6eDopW8I

Kick starting my career

Yesterday I received the most wonderful email i could ever receive. I emailed a local magasine; Mayhem! situated in Portsmouth, about getting a press pass to a local festival this saturday. There were only eight available. I thought I had contacted them too late, but I were wrong. They replied saying I had got one! Now this was marvelous! My eyes welled up with happiness and I cried ecstatically out loud! And as my mother asked me what I were acting so happy about, I read out the following email to her;

I were near jumping for joy at this absolutely fabulous news, little ol' Saffron can interview any band she likes and send the article to Mayhem! to be published in the magasine/website. Oh and not to mention a free T-shirt! I love free stuff! As soon as I have finished my writing I will upload it here for you to see, or I'll be a tease and show you when it's published...you'll have to wait to find out.

10 day 'you' challenge

#02 songs

#10 secrets // #09 loves // #08 fears // #07 wants // #06 places // #05 foods // #04 books // #03 films // #02 songs // #01 picture of yourself.

Hmm so favourite songs are usually tricky for me, because I love sooo many! But i'll give it a go;

1. Goo Goo Dolls-Iris-This is on my list for when i'm sad and missing the boyf, or just sad in general I feel like the lyric 'and i don't want the world to see me, cause i don't think that they'd understand' relates to how i feel at that moment, and i personally like to scream it out loud. I have an old friend to thank for this song, as it was his favourite song and apparently it's contagious!

2. You Me At Six-Always Attract-This became one of my favourite songs many years ago, well roughly two years ago. And it's mine and the other halves 'song' sure some of the lyrics aren't exactly positive, but the lyrics like 'i'll be home in a day' and 'if it hurts this much, then it must be love' relate to how i feel when i'm away from Connor, so i have him and a few friends to thank for this song being in my list.

3. Biffy Clyro-Many of Horror-Unfortunately i came across this as Matt Cardle sang it for his 'winners single' on The X Factor, but shortly after i heard the original version and loved it. The first bit i picked up on was the chorus 'when we collide we come together, if we don't we'll always be apart' and i sing it with the utter most enthusiasm, i sing it like i just don't care, and i love songs that make me feel like that, because we as people care far too much. When i listen to it, i'm in silence and i just listen, because he has a pretty good voice too. So i recommend learning the chorus and just belting it out of those lungs.

4. Elton John-Can you feel the love tonight-Now one of my all time favourite films is The Lion King, i used to watch it over and over as a child, so much so that apparently when i was only just crawling i learnt how to put in the video tape and would push my Granny's hands out of the way. I can't explain why it's my fave film, but along with the film are some songs i like, like this one. My dad tells me stories from when i was a young 'un, and one time it was his turn to feed me in the night, and he was trying to get me to sleep again so put on the music channel whilst cradling me, and this music video came on, and apparently i was fixated on the video. So this song on my list represents the relationship between me and my dad.

5. Daft Punk-Digital Love-This is a love of about ten decades, me and this song, i used to have this DVD of top songs from 2000..and something, and i love how they have the animation in the video, i love how each video tells a story and how they're connected. When i hear the song i think of the video in my head. I just love the tune it has, and obviously there's synthesizers in the vocals, but it does make it sound good so why not? I can happily say that i will keep singing this song for another decade.

I do have many other songs that i love, but i thought i'd give you a peek at my all time favourites as i'm sure they'll stay with me until i die!

10 day 'you' challenge

#01 picture of yourself.

#10 secrets // #09 loves // #08 fears // #07 wants // #06 places // #05 foods // #04 books // #03 films // #02 songs // #01 picture of yourself.

I've nicked this idea from a blog that I follow-http://nelipott.blogspot.co.uk/ so I decided to have a go at this ten day challenge thing.

Now I tend not to take too many photo's of myself but I made an exception the other day, because of the birth of my DSLR camera! Oh yes I FINALLY have one! It's a beautiful Canon EOS 1100D, and it is my baby. So I have chosen two photo's of me and my baby together, enjoy!

It's not a 'Saffron' photo without a kookiness added to it i'm afraid!

A short story I wrote at Christmas

In my local newspaper, they do a competition where you can send off a christmas story, but there's a twist; it has to be a ghost story too. I tried numerous different approaches for a story, and I was looking over my documents and came across it and have updated it. So have a read, and I'd love to hear what you think about it, I've been considering extending it into a possible book as I feel I've got a lot to give on this story.

I knew that when I woke up, I wouldn’t be alone. I would feel the same presence I have felt since I can remember. I know what day today is, 25th December, Christmas. Great. My least favourite day of the year, maybe even of the whole existence of the world. No offence to ‘religious’ people and that guy that wears a nappy on that cross, but I don’t believe in that gobbledy-goop. I once had some faith, but no one listened when I needed someone to help me.
I don’t want to hear ‘I wish it could be Christmas everyday’ blaring out from some boy racers tacky car. If it was I would be living my nightmare everyday. Ten years ago my dad disappeared. My mum was waiting at the front door when I got home from my grandparents, a handkerchief in one hand catching her tears; I had never heard some one cry and scream the way she had done. My parents were together since secondary school ‘high school sweethearts’ and after more than a decade they were still madly in love, I don’t know how that’s possible. My mum always told me she had no idea what happened to my dad that jolly noel day, I had many theories, but as I grew older I gave up. Along with my beliefs. Now I’ve become heartless, except on this day, which brings out my humanity.
Every morning I wake up and feel someone watching me, ever since that Christmas. I tried to figure out some meaning behind it; I’m delusional from grief to someone having an invisible cloak and watching me. Now, I just live with it. I get on and do my usual routine, but on this day I try my best to not let the anonymous eyes know that I know. I don’t have Christmas decorations, no tree no lights no measly chocolate advent calendar, nothing what so ever. I stumble down the stairs in my lonely house. I prefer to be alone; it’s quiet and I have my own rules and I’m left to my own thoughts, so I’m happy, as close as I can get anyway. In silence I eat my non-festive breakie and my mind gazes over the subject of my dad. I flinch as I feel a wave of emotion run through my veins. Shivers and goosebumps appearing all over my skin. I hate feeling this way, if I could turn off my feelings I would. With this wave I feel faint and drop my bowl of cereal “damn it” having to clean might take my mind off of things..Or do the reverse.
She can’t see me. Every day she can’t see me, she doesn’t notice me, apart from these little glitches here and there where I swear she knows I’m here. I need to do something drastic to get her attention today…
Once I had wiped away the remains of my corn flakes from the laminate floor I decided to have a kip, to be away from this world today. I got to my bedroom and lay on my double bed. I tried to get comfortable, but when something is playing on your mind it’s hard to relax. It’s silent everywhere, eerie, I turn on the TV to drone on. Scrooge is on, the one about the three ghosts haunting a dude that keeps his money to himself. This feels even more unsettling. It’s reminded me of that space in the corner of each room that draws me to it, like a magnet and a piece of metal, me being the heavy metal. When I look over to that space I feel all hazy like I am about to pass out from the strength of this pull. I need to confront this at one point or another, it’s been ten years of this, trying to ignore someone or something gets very tiring when you don’t know what or who it is. So I tore the covers off with my eyes on that point of my rectangular room, feeling a power inside of me like I’m being sucked in. As I walk closer my vision becomes shakey, I swear I can see something, I swear I can see the outline of that someone...wait no. It can’t be. Hair, arms, hands, torso, legs, and feet appear before me. It’s him it’s actually him after all this time.
This is it, my big moment. I don’t have too long; I must be quick, before it ends.
“I can’t believe this.” I managed to whisper. He's staring at me the same way I must be staring right back at him.
“Hello.”
“Whe-where have you been?” I have shortness of breath like I’ve got whiplash from a car crash.
“It’s complicated.”
“Well I’ll let you off then! No, tell me why I have made myself isolated because you disappeared off of the face of the earth!” I’m enraged as to why he’s been the missing father figure, why my life never pieces together.
“All I know is that I am stuck in this alternate dimension for the rest of my days. I can watch everyone but no one can see me, apart from you. You are the only one that can sense my presence, not even your mother. That’s why you feel me here all the time. I feel like I’m dead, but I never died.”
“Right, I find that hard to believe.”
“Your mother was out, and I was finishing off the presents, one of the ornaments on the mantle piece fell to the floor. I went to investigate and touched a fragment, and I felt this jolt through my body. Like I was being torn in half. I had left my body...a-and I could see it, me collapsed on the floor...and the old me started to dissolve before my eyes, and left this version of myself trapped here, when your mother came back I tried to tell her in every way I could but she couldn’t see or hear me.”
I couldn't believe what he was telling me. It must be lies. There's no reasonable explanation for him disapearing.
“I don't believe you. You vanish for years, a decade! And come back with some lousy excuse.” As I was shouting at him, my vision was going blurry...no my dad was the one who was blurry...
"Dad? What's happening to you?" a sudden sadness has now filled me.
“I’m so sorry I'm running out of time, I love you.” And he was gone, but never forgotten.

Band of the week-Spector

I had heard this song before and instantly could belt out a few lyrics, and I were just chilling in my room...ok sort of having a snooze (I'm getting old, as I just got a year older) listening to Radio 1.
The DJ is talking to this band of guys called 'Spector' and they sound like genuine cool guys who you could go out for a drink with. That's when they introduced their song -I was oblivious to the title as I was off with the fairies...- anyway it's called Never Fade Away, (of which I have decided to re-name my blog!) the instant I heard the intro I jumped up to turn my radio up so I could fill my ears with the gorgeous music. I wouldn't class them as stereotypical pop, and I instantly love music that's a little different. They remind me of a younger Editors, who come under indie rock. Seriously, check it out, this is my new fave song, and my band to watch to see how they turn out!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFCS2ah2xFg here's a link to the official video, just sit back and close your eyes and learn the basic lyrics.

ENJOY!
